Cause 2: your deficit shrank because you shrank

This one is unavoidable physics, and it's the reason every diet eventually stalls if nothing changes.

A smaller body costs less to run. You burn fewer calories at rest, and fewer moving that body through the day. On top of that, dieting itself produces adaptive thermogenesis: after losing weight, energy expenditure runs roughly 10–15% lower than body-composition changes alone would predict (Rosenbaum & Leibel, 2010). Your body also becomes more efficient at conserving energy in ways a bathroom scale can't see — less fidgeting, less spontaneous movement.

Add it up and a fixed 500 kcal/day cut is a genuine 500 kcal deficit in week one, maybe 300 by month three, and eventually zero.   5. Protect muscle. Adequate protein and resistance training preserve fat-free mass, which keeps your maintenance level higher and makes the weight you lose more likely to be fat.
  6. Fix sleep and stress before touching calories. Both drive fluid retention and appetite, and both are free.
  7. Measure honestly for two weeks. Not forever — just long enough to recalibrate portion sizes. Most drift is discovered, not confessed.

When a plateau is the right answer
