Most weight-loss stalls resolve on their own within two to four weeks, because most of them were never plateaus — they were water and daily noise covering up fat loss that never stopped. A genuine plateau is different: it doesn't expire on a schedule. It lasts until your energy balance changes, whether that takes a week or a year. The useful question isn't how long to wait it out, but how long to wait before you can tell which kind you have.

Why three to four weeks is the threshold
It's arithmetic, not folklore. Day-to-day weight swings of 0.5–2 kg (1–4 lb) come from water, glycogen, and gut contents. Real fat loss at a sustainable pace is about 0.25–0.5 kg (0.5–1 lb) per week.
That means one week of genuine progress is smaller than the noise around it. Two weeks is roughly comparable to the noise. Only around three to four weeks does the real change grow reliably larger than the scatter — and that's the point at which a flat scale carries actual information.
This is why the most common self-diagnosis error is impatience: a 10-day stall gets treated as a metabolic emergency, calories get slashed, and the response makes the eventual plateau worse. Waiting is genuinely the intervention for the first fortnight.
What the research says about when plateaus arrive
Across 80 weight-loss trials with at least a year of follow-up, the pattern is remarkably consistent: participants lose 5–8.5 kg (about 5–9% of body weight) over the first six months, then plateau at around the six-month mark, followed by slow regain (Franz et al., 2007).
Six months is the number worth remembering. If you've been losing steadily for half a year and progress flattens, you're not doing anything unusual — you've hit the same wall nearly every study population hits, for the reasons covered in why weight loss stalls: a smaller body burns less, dieting itself lowers expenditure by another 10–15%, and hunger hormones have been pushing intake upward the whole time.
Why a real plateau doesn't end on its own
A true plateau is an equilibrium. Your current intake now matches your current expenditure exactly. Nothing about that state is unstable, so there's no mechanism by which time alone resolves it — waiting another month simply produces another month of the same weight.
That's the difference from a water-driven stall, which ends when the trigger passes. Real plateaus end only when something moves: intake down, activity up, or the metabolic adaptation partially reversed by a spell at maintenance.

A four-step timeline for handling a stall
Week 1 — do nothing. Keep weighing consistently. Change no variables; you have no information yet.
Week 2 — check the obvious confounders. New workout program? Cycle phase? Restaurant week, travel, short sleep? Any of these makes the stall very likely to be fluid. Still change nothing.
Weeks 3–4 — confirm with the trend, then measure. If your trend line is genuinely flat, spend two weeks logging intake accurately. Portion drift is the single most common cause, and it's easier to detect than to admit — measured intake in "diet-resistant" dieters has run around 47% above what they reported (Lichtman et al., 1992).
Week 5 onward — adjust once, then wait again. Either cut 200–300 kcal/day, add activity, or take a deliberate two-week break at maintenance before resuming — that last approach produced more fat loss than continuous dieting in a controlled trial (Byrne et al., 2018).
