Every smart scale ships with its own app, and every one of those apps wants to be the place you look at your weight. You don't have to accept that. Apple Health acts as a neutral hub on iPhone: your scale writes weight into it, and whichever app you actually want to use reads it back out.
Once that's set up, the brand of scale genuinely stops mattering — and the second half of this guide explains why that's true mathematically, not just as reassurance.
How the plumbing works
There are three parties and one rule.
- The scale measures you and sends the reading to its own companion app over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
- The companion app writes that reading into Apple Health, if you give it permission.
- Any other app — a trend tracker, a fitness app — reads weight out of Apple Health, again with your permission.
The rule: iOS never lets an app touch Health data without you explicitly granting it, per data type. Nothing syncs by default, which is why a new scale often appears to "not work" with other apps until you flip one switch.
Note that Apple Health syncs across your devices via iCloud, but it is not a cloud service you log into on a website. The data lives on your devices.
The four steps that work for every scale
The wording differs between brands; the shape never does.
- Pair the scale with its own app first. Weigh yourself once and confirm the reading appears there. Nothing downstream works until this does.
- Turn on Apple Health in the scale's app. Look for Settings → Apple Health, Integrations, Connected apps, or Data sharing. Enable it, and on the permission sheet that appears, turn on Weight — the sheet opens with everything off, and tapping "Allow" without toggling anything grants nothing. If the app offers body fat and BMI too, enabling them is harmless.
- Grant your trend app read access. On first launch it asks for permission to read Weight. Allow it.
- Verify. Open the Health app → Browse → Body Measurements → Weight. Your reading should be listed with the scale's app named as its source. If it's there, you're finished.
To change permissions later: Health app → your profile picture → Apps, then pick the app and toggle the data types. This is also where you check what any app is allowed to see.

App menus and integrations change, so treat this as a starting point rather than a specification: the authority is the Apple Health or Integrations screen inside your scale's own app. If it's there, you're fine.
The Fitbit exception. Fitbit's app has long declined to write to Apple Health, and Google's acquisition hasn't changed that. Your options are a third-party bridging app from the App Store, or — far simpler — logging the number manually. One reading a day typed in by hand works exactly as well for trend purposes as an automatic one.
When it doesn't work
Run through these in order; it's almost always one of the first three:
- The permission toggle was never switched on. Check Health → profile → Apps. This is the cause the overwhelming majority of the time.
- The reading never reached the scale's own app. Open it and confirm. If it's missing there, this is a Bluetooth or account problem, not a Health problem.
- The scale assigned the weigh-in to another household member. Multi-user scales guess who stepped on by matching against recent weights, and they guess wrong when two people are close in weight. Reassign the reading in the scale's app and it will re-sync.
- Background sync hasn't run. Many scale apps only push to Health when opened. Open the app and pull to refresh.
- Two sources are both writing weight, so you see duplicates — for example the scale's app and a manual entry. Health keeps both; delete one, or just let your trend app treat them as two samples of the same day, which is harmless.
Why the brand doesn't matter
This is the part worth internalising, because it saves both money and worry.
There are two different qualities a scale can have, and they are not the same thing:
- Accuracy — how close the reading is to your true mass.
- Precision — how consistently it gives the same reading under the same conditions.
For trend tracking, precision is what matters and accuracy is almost irrelevant. Here's why: suppose your scale reads 0.4 kg heavy, every time. Your Monday reading is inflated by 0.4 kg. So is your reading four weeks later. When you subtract one from the other to get your rate of change, the offset cancels exactly. A consistently wrong scale produces a perfectly correct trend.
What a consistent offset does affect is anything that depends on your absolute weight — a BMI figure, a goal expressed as a specific number. Even then, a few hundred grams is well inside the range that hydration moves you anyway.
Now consider the thing that actually degrades a trend: inconsistent conditions. Weighing at different times of day, sometimes clothed, on carpet one day and tile the next, or with the scale moved between weigh-ins. These introduce variation that doesn't cancel, because it isn't the same every time.
Which leads to the practical hierarchy:
- Weighing at a consistent time — by far the biggest factor.
- A hard, level floor, same spot every time. Carpet compresses and genuinely changes readings.
- Consistent clothing — ideally none, or the same minimal amount.
- Weighing frequently enough for the trend to filter the noise.
- The scale itself — a distant last.
Any modern digital scale, including a cheap one, is precise to roughly ±0.1–0.2 kg under identical conditions. That's an order of magnitude smaller than your normal daily fluctuation of 0.5–2 kg. The scale is not your limiting factor. Your physiology is, and a trend line is the tool for that.
The one thing worth paying for is connectivity, and only because it removes friction. The best scale is the one that makes weighing so effortless you actually do it daily.
What about the body-fat percentage?
Consumer scales estimate body fat by passing a small current through your body and inferring composition from the resistance — bioelectrical impedance. Because the current takes the path of least resistance, a foot-to-foot scale mostly measures your legs and extrapolates the rest.
Treat these numbers with real scepticism. Compared with reference methods like DEXA, consumer BIA readings commonly differ by several percentage points, and they shift with hydration, recent food, recent exercise, and skin temperature. A morning reading and an evening reading can differ by several points with no change in your body.
They are not useless — the direction over months carries some information if you always measure under identical conditions. But do not treat any single body-fat reading as a measurement of your composition, and don't set goals against it.
No smart scale? You're not missing much
Manual entry costs about five seconds a day. The value in this whole system comes from daily consistent readings feeding a trend, not from the transport mechanism. A twenty-euro dial scale and a typed number produce the same trend line as a connected one — it's just slightly more friction, and friction is the enemy of consistency, which is the only reason to prefer a connected scale at all.
