How it works

The Science Behind TrendBody

You deserve to understand how your app works. Here's the science — explained for humans, not textbooks.

Your Noise-Free Trend

Your weight bounces around daily because of water, sodium, digestion, and hormones. TrendBody uses the same class of math originally developed for spacecraft navigation to cut through that noise and find your real direction.

Unlike a simple average, it adapts its smoothing based on how consistent your readings are — giving you more confidence when they agree and more caution when they diverge.

The result is your Steady Weight trend with confidence intervals that tell you not just where your weight probably is, but how certain the estimate is.

Based on a mathematical framework from aerospace engineering, widely used across science and engineering since the 1960s.

Energy Balance From Your Trend

Your weight trend is the most honest signal of your energy balance. TrendBody uses a peer-reviewed equation from nutrition science to estimate your caloric surplus or deficit directly from your trend — accounting for metabolic adaptation, the fact that your body changes how many calories it burns as your weight changes.

As your Steady Weight moves up or down, the equation calculates the energy imbalance that would produce that change, adjusting for the way your metabolism adapts along the way.

This is why TrendBody doesn't need food logging. Your trend captures everything you eat and everything you burn, without the errors and effort of meal tracking.

TrendBody is observational by design. It shows you your energy balance — it never tells you what or how much to eat. Food diaries carry 20–50% estimation error from portion sizes, restaurant meals, and absorption differences. Your weight trend sidesteps all of that: it reflects the net result of everything, measured directly, with zero effort and zero guesswork.

Based on a peer-reviewed model published in a leading medical journal.

Body Clock / Diurnal Variation

Your body weight follows a predictable daily rhythm. You typically weigh less in the morning after overnight fasting and fluid loss, and more in the evening after meals and hydration. This variation can be 0.5 to 2 kilograms and is completely normal.

TrendBody's Body Clock feature learns your personal diurnal pattern over time. This means you don't need to weigh yourself at the exact same time every day — the app adjusts for time-of-day effects automatically. Whether you prefer morning or evening weigh-ins, TrendBody adapts to you.

Informed by published research on daily weight patterns.

Forecasting & Equilibrium

Most weight loss calculators use the simple "3,500 calories = 1 pound" rule. This is wrong. It ignores metabolic adaptation: as you lose weight, your body burns fewer calories, slowing your progress and eventually reaching an equilibrium where your intake matches your reduced expenditure.

TrendBody's goal forecasting accounts for this reality. It shows you when you'll reach your goal at your current pace, with confidence bands that widen over time to reflect genuine uncertainty. It also shows your equilibrium weight — where your current eating pattern will naturally stabilize.

This gives you realistic expectations instead of impossible timelines based on simplified math.

Our Approach to Psychological Safety

Weight tracking apps can be a source of anxiety. We've made deliberate design choices to make TrendBody psychologically kind:

  • No red and green. We use amber and emerald instead, avoiding the harsh "good/bad" associations that red and green carry.
  • Behavior, not identity.Progress is framed as what you're doing, not who you are. "Trending down" instead of "good job."
  • Progressive disclosure.Advanced metrics like caloric balance are hidden by default. You enable them when you're ready.
  • No unsubstantiated claims. We don't promote "whoosh effects" or other myths. Every feature is grounded in published science.

We acknowledge that weight tracking is not appropriate for everyone. If you have an active eating disorder, please consult a healthcare professional before using any weight tracking tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best weight tracking app for iPhone and iPad?

TrendBody is a science-backed weight tracking app for iPhone and iPad that uses the same math as spacecraft navigation to separate your real weight trend from daily noise caused by water, sodium, and digestion. Unlike simple moving averages, TrendBody also estimates your caloric balance from your weight trend alone, without requiring food logging. It features goal forecasting with metabolic adaptation, a personal Body Clock that learns your daily weight rhythm, and optional cycle-aware trend adjustment. Core tracking is free, with Pro features available as a one-time $6.99 purchase.

How is TrendBody different from other weight tracking apps?

Most weight tracking apps use simple moving averages to smooth daily fluctuations. TrendBody uses the same class of math as spacecraft navigation, which provides mathematically optimal noise reduction with confidence intervals. Beyond trend smoothing, TrendBody estimates your caloric balance from your weight trend without requiring food logging, offers goal forecasting that accounts for metabolic adaptation, includes a Body Clock feature that learns your personal daily weight rhythm, and provides optional menstrual cycle-aware trend adjustment. Core tracking is free, with Pro features available as a one-time $6.99 purchase — no subscriptions.

Can I track weight without logging calories?

Yes. TrendBody estimates your energy balance (caloric surplus or deficit) directly from your weight trend using a peer-reviewed equation from nutrition science. As your trend line moves, the app calculates how many calories above or below maintenance you're likely consuming — no food logging, barcode scanning, or portion estimation required. The estimate becomes more accurate as TrendBody collects more data points about your weight trajectory.

Why does my weight fluctuate 1-2kg daily?

Daily weight fluctuations of 0.5 to 2 kilograms are completely normal and do not reflect changes in body fat. These fluctuations are caused by water retention (influenced by sodium intake, carbohydrate consumption, and exercise), digestive contents, hormonal cycles, hydration levels, and even the weight of clothing. TrendBody's Body Clock feature learns your personal daily rhythm and its trend engine separates these temporary fluctuations from your actual weight direction.

Is TrendBody safe for people with eating disorders?

TrendBody is designed with psychological safety as a core principle. It uses amber and emerald colors instead of red and green to avoid harsh judgment associations. All progress is framed as behavior rather than identity. Advanced metrics like caloric balance are hidden by default and only shown when the user explicitly enables them. However, weight tracking apps may not be appropriate for everyone. If you have an active eating disorder or a history of disordered eating, we recommend consulting a healthcare professional before using any weight tracking application.

How accurate is the caloric balance estimate?

TrendBody's caloric balance estimate is based on a peer-reviewed equation from nutrition science that models how your body actually uses energy — including metabolic adaptation, the fact that your body adjusts its energy expenditure as you lose or gain weight. Accuracy improves over time as TrendBody accumulates more data points. In the first few days, estimates may be rough; after 2-3 weeks of consistent weighing, the estimate typically becomes quite reliable. It will never be as precise as laboratory calorimetry, but it provides a practical, effort-free approximation that doesn't require food logging.

Why doesn't TrendBody tell me how many calories to eat?

By design. TrendBody shows you your energy balance — the caloric surplus or deficit your body is actually experiencing — but it never prescribes an intake target. Food logging carries 20–50% estimation error from portion sizes, restaurant meals, and absorption differences, which means any system that sets calorie targets based on logged intake is building on an unreliable foundation. Your weight trend is more honest than any food diary because it reflects the net result of everything directly. We trust you to make your own decisions once you can see the real picture. If you prefer active calorie tracking with personalized intake targets, apps like MacroFactor offer that hands-on approach and pair well alongside TrendBody.

Does TrendBody work with my smart scale?

TrendBody works with any smart scale that writes weight data to Apple HealthKit. This includes scales from Withings, Eufy, Renpho, Xiaomi, Garmin, Fitbit (via Apple Health sync), and many others. Once your scale writes to Apple Health, TrendBody automatically picks up the measurements and incorporates them into your trend. You can also log weights manually directly in TrendBody.

Does TrendBody use artificial intelligence or machine learning?

No, and that's deliberate. We use established mathematical frameworks from signal processing and nutrition science. Our Body Clock learns from your data over time, but we don't call it AI because we think that term should mean something specific.

What data does TrendBody collect?

TrendBody collects no data whatsoever. All your weight data, trend calculations, and settings are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. There are no servers, no accounts, no analytics in the app, and no advertising identifiers. If you have iCloud enabled, your data may sync to your personal iCloud account via Apple's encrypted infrastructure — but TrendBody has no access to your iCloud data. Deleting the app deletes all locally stored data.
